Not a single one of them stand a chance.

And so last week ("apols of nothing" for the late review!) we found ourselves at Ye Olde Heaven(ne?) under the glamourous arches of Charing Cross at the first official gig of Robyn's Body Talk era. Lucky buggers are we. Almost two years to the exact day that we last had the pleasure of sharing her presence, your intrepid Shiny & New reporters ventured out for an evening of robots, fembots and dancing by ourselves. Really justifying our journalisic medals of excellence here.

Kicking off with a wonderfully uninspiring performance from the latest musical nepotistic nitwist I Blame Coco (personally we blame Sting. For everything) the night officially began with three amazing Body Talk songs - "Fembot", the euphoric "Cry When You Get Older" and the absolute masterpiece that is "Dancing On My Own". We surprised with the early inclusion of such an otherwise obvious set-closer in the running but by no means disappointed. The crowd were as energetic and thrilled as they would have been with three old songs, which stands as a mark of the standard of the new material.

Speaking of which, the re-inventions of her oldiez were incredible. "Who's That Girl" took more than a little inspiration from namesake Robin S.'s "Show Me Love" and "Be Mine" was devoid of the wistful charm the original carried in the new intimidating assertive version performed. Naturally ending with a spellbinding encore of "With Every Heartbeat", the gig was a showcase to some of the finest pop music in existence, a sentence we can wholeheartedly write with no doubt of its validity. Robyn has her corner of the market under her thumb; no one else can quite master that cool, crisp and downright sad electro pop that seems to flow from her pores. We've just invested in some tickets for her October tour and we have no doubt that the material she will be playing then - Body Talk Pt. 2 - will be just as good as what has come before it.
