Drum roll, please...

Yes, tonight marks the triumphant return of everyone's favourite (including mine) high class prostitute, Bille Piper. Sorry, Belle Du Jour. After a successful first series that has since gone on to enchant and win over everyone on the other side of the Atlantic, it is back again, with more sexual hijincks, posh pants and general salaciousness. But for all the suspender belts, martinis and pouting, (and the general amazingness of Madame Piper), I must admit I was a tad disappointed. Anyone who has read the book may understand (that sounds very inclusive and sniffy, apologies).

Filled with much more than the usual sordid encounter, it was a wonderful piece of writing which reveled not only in eroticism but also in generally enjoying life, not just strewn condom wrappers and the petit mort. In general, it breathed life into sumptuous sensuality and luxury which come with such a unique profession, as well as a peek into the mind of a mysterious and intelligent woman.

The television series did well to recreate this aspect of Belle's world, but manages to totally skim across a great deal of the book's greater stories and anecdotes, replaced, instead with a script produced by Lucy Prebble. Prebble is a young up and coming sort, and has established herself as a dependable and witty TV writer after previously writing for theatre with a work entitled "The Candy Syndrome" (I may need to double check that) about paedophilia and sexual awakening.

Yet still, with 'SDOACG', there still seems to be something lacking. Perhaps it is the time constraint of the format, meaning that story lines must be snappy, slick and episodic. But it manages to lose part of the essence of the original book, and, more importantly, puts far too much make up on Billie Piper, so she sometimes resembles a common street walker.

Hopefully, however, this will all be shortlived, with its second series debut tonight, especially considering Billie Piper's flawless acting and her ability to fill out a good set of underwear.
