Utada Hikaru is the best J-Pop singer in the world. She writes her own stuff. She's a little bit weird. And in 2004 she released one of the most underrated pop masterpieces of all time, Exodus, which was produced by Timbaland (before he was popular) and released in the US and UK to the sound of people not giving a shit about Asian popstars.
In Japan she has the biggest selling album of all time (her debut, First Love) and is the unequivocal Queen of J-Pop worldwide. This is her new English-language single... Sort of Ashanti B-side circa 2003, isn't it?
We expected better from a woman responsible for one of the most ambitious and brilliant pop albums of the 21st Century so far... but then when she actually made good music no one bought it outside of Japan, so maybe she's just churning out shit in the hopes that she'll crack the Billboard Hot 100.
Either way... FAIL.
