We just don't get Florence and the Machine.
In case you live in a box she's one of the hot new things for 2009, and quite frankly, she's not very good. In the past we've heard her compared to Björk, PJ Harvey and even Kate Bush! Quite what this snobby, rich girl with the talent and artistry of Peaches Geldof has in common with the aforementioned Queens of Ethereal Folk Rock Pop is anybody's guess.
She's the kind of artist that everyone raves about but no one's actually heard any of their music. She's already won that Brit award that Adele won last year and yet most people still don't know who she is. Well we're here to tell you who she is: shit. Watching that clip up above does not conjure any images of fog-covered mountains, fairies at the bottom of your garden or misty lakes in Yorkshire. It conjures images of Hoxton at 2 in the morning on a Tuesday.
All things considered Florence et al isn't the worst thing to happen to the music industry ever, but considering she's being marketed as "kooky" and "quirky" and "folky" we are sincerely disappointed. There is nothing kooky, quirky or folky about the above clip. It is simply loud, substandard, middle-of-the-road, chart indie with strangely sexist undertones (is she condoning domestic violence?).
Not impressed.
