Good news first... always good news first. Basically, isn't it nice to see Akon releasing a song that is praising and WORSHIPPING a woman by calling her 'beautiful' and saying he's not going to leave her?
I mean I know it's not exactly a FEMINIST CALL TO ARMS. But seriously... from an artist who in the past has had singles called things as classy and respectful to women as Smack Dat and I Wanna Fuck You, it's definitely refreshing to hear him say something NICE, even if he is still concentrating on what the woman looks like, and proclaiming that he wants to get with her.
This doesn't mean we actually like the song, though. It's still substandard, mediocre, contemporary chart Hip'n'B (we coined that, like, JUST NOW). It's also shamelessly ripping off Europop and disco (which is very gay) and later we're going to do a post where we point out the recent trend of American Hip Hop artists borrowing heavily from predominantly gay songs or genres. You'll have to wait til then for our full analysis, but it's going to be heavy (or just really cringey and shit, depending on how you look at things).
The BAD news is that we're sort of boycotting Youtube. Basically this law has been put in place (or maybe it's just a rule... who knows) whereby people in Britain aren't allowed to watch music videos on youtube.
We're not sure how this works because we can still watch SOME music videos, but others, if you click on them you will be told that the content is unavailable in your country.
We think is completely ridiculous and so are using Dailymotion as much as possible. Many artists BANK on youtube being a showcase for their music videos, and taking them down is not only detrimental to them but also REALLY ANNOYING (we're still pissed off that you can no longer watch Madonna videos on there).
A music video is supposed to help promote a song, and I'm sure many artists like Lady GaGa have found youtube absolutely instrumental in helping them spread the word about their songs and other content. Without music videos on youtube, it will become a sad graveyard of 2 Girl 1 Cup reaction videos, and endless remixes of that Charlie Bit My Finger video.
SAD DAY FOR MUSIC.
