Jordin Sparks is an anomaly. She's a soulful big ballad singer and winner of American Idol and yet her last album was full of epic mid-tempo pop stompers. We enjoyed.
This is her comeback single, and can we go on record to say it is fucking stunning, if completely derivative. It doesn't take a genius to realise this was written/produced/whatevered by Ryan Tedder. But you know what, readers? Sometimes you just have to surrender yourself to the music and admit that it carries you the fuck away no matter what your preconceptions.
Just to give you an idea of what the above song sounds like. Imagine if you had a big song machine and you put "Umbrella", "Halo", "Angel", "Tattoo", "Already Gone", "Bleeding Love" and Pat Benatar's fantastic 80s smash hit "Love Is A Battlefield" into it. You would get this song: Jordin Sparks' "Battlefield."
Yes it sort of sounds like all those songs up there but it also sounds like none of them. We fully retain the right to do a 180 degree U-turn and renounce our love of this.
