The BQE (which stands for Brooklyn-Queens Express) is Sufjan Stevens new album, and it is lush, complex, demanding but also beautiful, grand and inventive. It doesn't really seem to count as a 'proper' Sufjan album, as its purely instrumental, but seeing as Mr. Stevens has already released 1 instrumental electronic album, 2 concept albums, 1 studio album, 1 religious album, 1 rarities and leftovers album and a set of Christmas albums, the sense of what's 'proper' went out the window long ago...
If you liked Emilie Simon's March of the Empress or Björk's Drawing Restraint 9 or even Joanna Newsom's Ys then you will probably love this. But if you struggle with classical music, or anything that doesn't have words, lyrics or a chorus, then it's probably best you steer clear. Grandiose, almost bloated works of twisted genius and beauty aren't for everyone, are they?
