We've made our feelings RE: Florence '+ the' Machine known. Not only was her album in our top 10 of 2009, but "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" was our song of the entire year. In short: we like her a lot. But then of course we do. We totally dig that batshit crazy, woman-of-the-moors, faerie goddess, folk-totin', harp-wielding shebang. We love Florence's various 'bird-based' setups in this video and we think this, above, is a fairly solid effort, especially for the sixth single from a debut album.
BUT. We still think this is one of the less good songs on her album. The whole ethereal, otherworldly folk sprite thing she has going on, is somewhat spoiled by the blatant pandering to her core (but traditionally fickle) fanbase: the sex'n'drugs-obsessed 'Skinzzzz'-watching yoof who largely populate her concerts. Maybe the "I'm going to drink myself to death" shit will get old for her and she'll drop it from here on out. But it just doesn't do it for us. It ruins a sonically fine song and provides the basis for our initial dislike of her. It's not that we're morally opposed to it. It's just boring, obvious, childish and... done.
Other than that: good effort.
