Honey, what's this?

Rihanna's new single is called "Only Girl (In The World)", which, the last time we checked, was at number 1 on the iTunes chart in five countries worldwide. It is amazing and it is going to be a big hit for her. Which is why everyone is confused as to where THIS comes from? It's a David Guetta-produced track (we know this because he played a snippet for it ages ago in a French radio interview that found its way onto Youtube) with a Jonas Akerlund-directed video (it's listed on his website under Music Videos). But beyond that we're stumped. Supposedly it was leaked and it's either not finished or not ready. Theories as to where it might come from and what it might be extend to:
  • Promo single à la "Wait Your Turn"
  • Club promo
  • David Guetta re-release single
  • Dorito's advert (!!!)
No matter what it's for, we can officially state that it is VERY GOOD although here are some things that would tip it over the edge into pop masterpiece territory:
  • An extended chorus: after RiRi sings "who's that chick? who's that chick?" for the second time, there's a bit of instrumental, over which she should be singing the epic post-chorus/second-chorus/melodic hook about having neon blood flowing through her veins or something. MISSED ENORMOCHORUS OPPORTUNITY.
  • Less autotune. Yes we understand it's 'a sound', just as peep-toe wedge boots are 'a look', but we don't care for it. We're not saying it should be eradicated entirely - manipulating vocals is an integral and fascinating part of dance and dance-pop music and when used creatively (as with Fever Ray or whatever) can have an incredible effect. Here, however, it is used both lazily and liberally and we do not want.
Other than that: top marks RiRi.

UPDATE:
Rihanna just posted on twitter that this is indeed a Doritos thing and nothing to do with her upcoming album, Loud.
"Who's that Chick, is an online music video/commercial that we shot for Doritos and it got leaked........."

"I don't want u to get confused...doritos is in no way connected to LOUD"
So that's that then. Hopefully it'll still be a hit for her!
