Santigold has finally decided to roll out of her Brooklyn pit and put some music out. Her album, along with Ladyhawke's, was the sound of our 2008 but unfortunately a very short period of massive over-listening left us a tad burn out. However, there were many reasons we listened to it in the first place. Santigold is interesting, and we mean that with total sincerity. She was one of the first black artists who didn't make R'n'B, hip hop or (God forbid anyone uses this term with a straight face) 'urban' music, to call out music listeners and critics alike who put any musician with black skin into an 'urban' box, and while her music is certainly influenced by a plethora of black musicians (heck, what isn't it influenced by though?) there is no specific genre you can place it in. In our iTunes she fell under the umbrella of 'Alternative', which is still quite pathetic.
Moving swiftly on. The lead track from the new album is titled "GO", and features the majestic Karen O (who shares our birthday don'tchano). Upon first listen, it took our ears a while to adjust. Usually though when our ears have to adjust, it means upon second listen we will most likely love it. And we did. You have to be patient, give it a few times. Gradually with further listens you will like it more and more. It's dark, it's marching, it's feverish, it's relentless, it's the kind of thing we love. Hurrah for Santigold!
