Some Alternative Aerobics for a Sunday Morn

There are a number of excellent female artists 'in da industry' working with loop stations. Viola player and vocalist Led To Sea, who we saw support Laura Veirs, is one. The enigmatic Julianna Barwick, who creates vast, echoing choral textures, is another. But perhaps the most intriguing artist with the greatest crossover appeal and the most unhinged and original shtick is American multi-instrumentalist Merrill Garbus, a.k.a. tUnE-yArDs (yes, really).

As we're hideously late with everything, we only became aware of her recently and unlike you doubtlessly hip dudes and dudettes (christ, soz about that) have only been made acquainted with her recently released 2nd album, W H O K I L L (again: yes, really). Anyway, this, the video for her single "Bizness" is a good place to start for any of you who are immediately put off by deliberately silly grammatical styling. We realise this is the kind of video, much like Feist's "1234", that is practically crafted with run-away crossover success in mind, but no matter. It's still a raucous, thoroughly enjoyable few minutes. Certainly, many arena-playing diva popstars could learn a thing or two about how to make a vidular promo watchable as opposed to deathly dull from this.

Also: how on earth is it possible for that child to be so fierce? Not 'drag queen fierce', but literally, FIERCE. Amazing.
