3.2.12

Today has been a VERY GOOD day

We've already made our feelings on "Give Me All Your Luvin'" clear, but to re-cap, we concluded that while the song really doesn't sound like anything else in the charts and is a cheerful dancefloor ditty with hints of "Beautiful Stranger", it's not quite album lead single material. It's no "Like a Prayer", "Frozen" or God forbid, "Hung Up". Furthermore, considering the traumatically low quality of videos we've had since the aforementioned ABBA-sampling masterpiece - "Sorry", "Give It 2 Me", "Celebration", even "4 Minutes" was a bit naff - our hopes were middling-to-low for the accompanying vid. You'd have thought that by now we would learn to trust our Queen. We would give her the benefit of the doubt each time and learn to expect the very best instead of the average. But we are more than happy to hold our hands up high and declare the "Give Me All Your Luvin'" a genuinely hilarious, wonderful camp masterpiece in the vein of "True Blue" and "Material Girl" - in other words, to quote MuuMuse, Fundonna is back. There's nothing quite as stirring as seeing Her Miserable Humourless Madjesty, Est. 2003, laughing, taking the piss and throwing a baby doll off-camera with the same zest as she would Lady Gaga's head.

Unsurprisingly, the usual vitriol has begun to appear. "She's too old", "She's using Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. to stay young", "It's embarrassing", etc. You've read/heard it all before. It tells us she's doing her job correctly - pissing people off. The very nerve of a woman in her mid-50s to be carried by a team of footballers wearing little to nothing with genuinely flawless skin and hair is positively outrageous - how could she? Why would she? Who does she think she is? Fucking Madonna. She hasn't appealed so directly to camp since her pink leotard days seven years ago, with the fabulous trenchcoat/sunglasses combo pushing her Malawian baby pram from behind a falling door, before being carried sideways by her footballer army. She's fucking fantastic and she knows it - the smirks, the laughter, the confidence. We didn't see any of this coming. Why did we ever think we'd be disappointed?

Other amazing points:

  • THE BEAUTY SPOT IS BACK!!!!! Paying homage to herself (and forcing Nicki and Maya to do so with her), she's pencilled in that beautiful little freckle for the first time since Blond Ambition
  • Nicki's Adidas corset - please can we have one right now
  • The triumphant finale. Apparently the video is a prequel to the Super Bowl performance on Sunday... what might happen next?
