"DJ", by Alphabeat, is going to be the next single and will apparently 'save' the whole campaign in England, after stellar lead single "The Spell" peaked at 20 and showed no signs of rocketing to number 1. If we're honest, we don't care about 'saving' Alphabeat. Alphabeat don't need British chart success to a) continue making music b) keep a record deal ("The Spell" did go to number 1 in Denmark, so we're sure they'll still have a 'home' there). They also don't need to go to number 1 in the UK to continue touring. They seem to routinely sell out 'academies' and will doubtlessly continue to harbor 'the hipster vote' and 'the general youth vote' no matter what their sales figures. "Fascination", after all, only went to number 7 in the UK, and that's practically considered a modern classic already.
So yes. "DJ" by Alphabeat. A fantastic little pop song, with a bonkersly amazing middle 8 (think Madge's "Get Together") and enough hooks to endow a fishing boat. Will it 'save' the campaign? Will it even go top 40? Do we care? No. Because, readers, yet again, it is all about the musiczzzzz.
