Kelis-related-post #2

As we promised in a post not so very long ago, we're 'getting back to you' on the subject of Kelis' fab-o-los "Acapella". On our first listen, it struck us as quite sparse, empty and lacking something - then the chorus and its beautiful hook broke through, and suddenly the entire song made complete sense. Listening from start to finish is like someone dragging you to a smoky dancefloor where you can't really see them - they are holding your hands, they might even have their arms around your waist, you know they are there - but visibility is low, as an esteemed BBC weather presenter would judge the situation. When you hear "Before you, my whole life was acapella / Now our symphony's the only song to sing" the smoke disappears and you see the person leading you, moving their body against yours.

As much as we hate the term (because this particular writer hates letting things "grow", he wants amazingness now!), this song is a grower. The full genius doesn't hit you until listen #2, #3 or maybe #8, but it is waiting in there to be let out at the appropriate moment. One more thing - we've read this on three different blogs now, and so loathe the urge to write it ourselves but it really, really is true. This is some Donna Summer shit for 2009. The pulsing beat, the warmth and love, the vicious urge to dance. We feel love!
