Last night Robert Sherman passed away at the rather regal age of 86. Together with his brother Richard, the Sherman brothers are an irremovable stitch in Disney's rich musical tapestry, and had a talent for creating earworm hooks laden with trademark sentimentality that were quite literally a part of everyone's childhood from the sixties onwards. One of the few remaining creatives to have actually worked directly alongside Walt Disney himself, the Sherman brothers are an important link to a song craftmanship that while some may see as rather quaint and old fashioned, was incredibly influential and founded in quality.
With his brother, Robert scored;
- The Parent Trap
- The Sword in the Stone
- Mary Poppins
- The Jungle Book
- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968 film and 2002 musical)
- "it's a small world"
- The Enchanted Tiki Room
In our opinion, nothing they did came close to the definition of hauntingly beautiful, "Feed the Birds". Listen and have a good weep.
